Winter in Transylvania

Winter is a very nice season here in Transylvania. If you like birds and nature you can find some interesting subjects even in the shortest and coldest days of the year.  This year the first snow and freezing cold arrived in the end of December. By this time Ural Owls spending lot of time in the open areas in search of Common Voles.  If you lucky you can find some hungry and therefore very friendly individuals in the daylight. These birds are easily approachable and usually allowing good photo opportunities.

Male Eagle Owls in the end of January already start calling in the breeding territories. Bearded Reedlings are resident birds in their breeding areas. In winter they gather in flocks and mainly feeding most of the day.

Brown Bears usually hibernating until end of March but by the end of January they start looking for food depend on the snow conditions. The weather now is not as harsh as last year and we saw even mother bears with last year cubs in the feeding area!

A hungarian traditional spring weather forecast related to Bears movement in the very first days of February. If in these days, the weather is nice and clear Bears know the spring is still far away but if the weather is more overcastted they think the spring is in our doorstep and keep looking for food every day and finishing the hibernation.
